The MOURARIA NEIGHBOURHOOD
While once a much more hectic and run down area it is now becoming a very trendy and sought after location.
It's the city's most multicultural district, with a total of 56 nationalities living here, most of them from Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan and Mozambique.
However, La Mouraria has lost none of its authenticity, with its decrepit walls and the washing drying in the windows.
Located between Martim Moniz and the São Jorge Castle, to get a feel for the atmosphere, you have to come and lose yourself in the narrow streets. They are sometimes no more than a metre wide.
A HISTORICAL AREA
The Mouraria area is one of Lisbon's most traditional neighbourhoods. The Moors lived here after the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 until their expulsion in the 15th century.
It was in the heart of these winding alleys that fado was born, a melancholy music that comes from the underbelly of the Portuguese capital.
Severa, the first known fado singer in Portugal in the 19th century, lived here. It is said that Severa fell in love with a count and it was here that fado first appeared in aristocratic halls. In the 20th century, Fernando Maurício, considered the "king of Mouraria fado", also lived here. Rua do Capelão is part of the iconography of fado. It was also in Mouraria that Mariza, the most internationally ac-tual fado singer, grew up.

MOURARIA AND ITS TYPICAL RESTAURANTS
Mouraria has some of the most authentic local restaurants in the city.
Cantinho do Aziz- If you like quiet restaurants, you've come to the wrong place... This restaurant serves typically colourful Mozambican food in a very relaxed atmosphere! From crab to curry to "muamba" chicken, it's all delicious...
Mi Dai - this restaurant is located at 7 of Calçada da Mouraria but you won't find any front or name...in fact it's a traditional Chinese canteen! You choose your ingredients at the counter and the cooks prepare your wok in front of you... an extraordinary experience!
Tentações de Goa - In the evening, this rather gloomy alleyway between the squares of Figueira and Martim Moniz is not very attractive, but you have to get past it to discover this small, very colourful restaurant (25 covers). Delicious food, usually quite spicy...
The Food Temple - This is the restaurant to try if you want to discover exquisite flavours from elsewhere. The chef is from Russia and has built his culinary education by travelling the world. It's truly innovative and delicious.
Zé da Mouraria - Typical restaurant, very noisy but authentic. They only speak Portuguese and there are very few dishes on the menu, which is proof of the freshness of the produce. Everyone in Lisbon knows the address. For a feast, take one dish for 2 people, it's more than enough!
