To ensure you are well-prepared, we have compiled a list of the 10 things that absolutely must be on your travel itinerary. 1. Ride the funicular up to the Città Alta.
For 120 years, the funiculars have traversed Bergamo's ancient walls, connecting the contemporary city center to its medieval heart.
The views during the journey are superb. 2. Stroll along the 5 km of the Venetian Walls, a UNESCO heritage site.
Walk the entire 5 km of the Venetian Walls, the protagonists of Bergamo's unmistakable skyline.
The sunset viewed from the ramparts is priceless! A secret: from the binoculars you'll find along the route, you can see Milan! 3. Visit just one palace to meet all the Renaissance masters: the Accademia Carrara.
Botticelli, Bellini, Raphael, Titian, Lotto, and the great Bergamo portraitist Moroni.
Meet the greats of 16th-century Italian art; they are all at the Accademia Carrara: its collection is among the most precious in Europe. 4. Listen to Donizetti's music in his birthplace.
Enter the birthplace of the great composer, and you will understand the essence of his story and hear his works echoing within these ancient walls. 5. Enjoy nature just a stone's throw from the city.
An unusual way to discover Bergamo's green heart is to explore the protected area of the Parco dei Colli, with its stairways and paths that cross woods and terraced fields, offering unexpected views. 6. Shake hands with a Nobel laureate.
The season of grand events in the city never ends: meet the Nobel laureates at BergamoScienza, discover Piazza Vecchia transformed into a designer garden, and choose from festivals of storytelling, philosophy, cinema, and much more. 7. Taste Stracciatella at the very gelateria where it was invented.
Cream ice cream with crunchy melted chocolate.
How did this idea come about? To find out, we recommend visiting "La Marianna" in Colle Aperto, the gelateria where the most beloved flavor by children was invented. 8. Count the hundred chimes of the Campanone.
Don't miss the centuries-old tradition: every evening at 10 PM in Piazza Vecchia, the large bell at the top of the civic tower rings 100 times, which once served to notify residents of the closing of the city gates. 9. Touch for good luck! A small ritual for good fortune: on the gate of the Colleoni Chapel, there is a coat of arms depicting the attributes of the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni.
There are three, and they are very shiny... it is said that rubbing them brings great satisfaction! 10. Experience the city from sunset to sunrise.
Discover nocturnal Bergamo: happy hour in the small bars of Piazza Pontida with cocktails, delicious buffets, and DJ sets.
The evening continues in Borgo Santa Caterina, full of little bars and music, an excellent base from which to move on to dance in a club or enjoy a live concert. Accompany all this with typical dishes like polenta or casoncelli and local wines such as Valcalepio or Moscato di Scanzo and... your vacation is served! What are you waiting for!?
