If your idea of a Norfolk Broads holiday is peace, open countryside and life right beside the river, Dydle Down is somewhere rather special.
This traditional wooden riverbank bungalow sits on the quieter reaches of the River Thurne between Potter Heigham and Martham, with beautiful south-facing views along the river and across the grazing meadows beyond.
There's no road access here – and that's all part of its charm.
Reached on foot or by boat, Dydle Down has a genuine away-from-it-all feel, yet Potter Heigham is around a 15-minute walk away. Put your dydle down and relax The unusual name couldn't be more fitting. A dydle is a scoop on a long pole traditionally used to clear ditches and navigable channels, while to “put your dydle down” means to take a rest – which is exactly what this little riverside retreat invites you to do. Open the glazed doors from the living area onto the raised deck, find a seat overlooking the River Thurne and enjoy the boats, wildlife and wide Norfolk skies. There's a lawn beside the river, garden furniture for four and more than 25ft of river frontage, giving you plenty of opportunity to enjoy the waterside setting. A lovely spot for anglers and boaters Dydle Down is particularly well suited to anyone who wants to spend their holiday on or beside the water. There's a double mooring dock plus additional mooring space along the river frontage, with room for boats and paddlecraft. Anglers are well catered for too, with fishing from the river frontage and a secure outdoor shed complete with a bait fridge for storing fishing equipment. Simple, comfortable and full of character Inside, the bright open-plan lounge and dining area looks towards the river, while the kitchen has a full-size electric oven, microwave and fridge. The cottage sleeps four across a double bedroom and a twin bedroom with two single beds, with bed linen and towels provided. Electric radiator heating, free Wi-Fi and TV/Freeview are also included, making Dydle Down a comfortable base even when you'd rather stay tucked up inside and watch the river go by.
