The area and getting around

Legendary mountain scenery

The Harz National Park was formed in 2006 by the merging of two existing parks: the "Hochharz" and the "Harz" to form an area of approximately 25,000 hectares. In this wonderful gift of nature, more than 2,500 events are held every year to allow visitors to discover the gifts of this national park. In addition to its exceptional green areas, it has forest trails and ski slopes.

What characterises Harz?

The Harz mountain range has a very harsh climate and sufficiently varied geology to define the northernmost medium-altitude mountain system in Germany. Within the Harz, habitats are protected to continue their natural process of being born, living and dying, and man's action on forest ecosystems, cliffs, streams and marshes is prevented.

Travellers and activities

Harz for hiking lovers

The Harzer Wandernadel is a hiking award scheme in the Harz mountain range. Mountain bikers or hikers will be able to win amazing prizes by going through different challenges divided into levels. The purpose of this scheme is to provide visitors with more than just knowledge, it is to give them the opportunity to reach a new goal and invite them to come back, and to invite the surrounding inhabitants to join in and keep a better physical attitude. There are 222 checkpoints to pass through and hand in your passbook to be stamped and become the Harz Hiking Emperor.

Harz for nature lovers

The Baumannshohle is one of Germany's fantastic show caves, the oldest, specifically in the Harz district. The cave was formed in limestone similar to the Devonian limestone of the Elbingerod complex. It is a cave with several connected cavities, most notably the Leuchter Gorge which is known for its one-metre high stalagmites while the Goethe Hall is the largest hall with 2,500 square metres where different concerts and some plays are performed.

Did you know that the Brocken is considered to be Europe's most famous meeting place for witches? In fact, Goethe says so in his work Faust and other poems, in "Winter Journey to the Harz"

Top 5 travel tips in Harz

1. Test your heart rate on the iconic Brocken

It is the highest mountain in the Harz mountains and in northern Germany, situated between the rivers Elbe and Weser. The annual temperature of the mountain is 2.9 C°, it remains shrouded in fog for 300 days of the year and from May to September it is covered in snow. The Brocken is well-known for its mention in Goethe's "Faust" in which legends about the devil and witches are related to the mountain range. Hop on the steam train to the top of the mountain, the Brockenbahn.

2. Admire the Harz from the heights of the historic Falkenstein Castle

It is a German fort located on a hill in the Harz mountain range in the town of Falkenstein. It was built from 1120 to 1150 by the Konradsburg lords and according to history, the origin of the fortress is due to a murder around 1080 where a nobleman killed Count Adalbert II in a fierce fight. Today the castle has been converted into a museum and its grounds are sometimes used for various events. Enjoy the falconry and the restaurant inside the museum, offering traditional chivalric food. A curious fact is that the castle is the 200th checkpoint of the Harzer Wandernadel award system.

3. Discover the history surrounding the attractive Michaelstein Abbey

Once a Cistercian monastery and now a Foundation and Music Institution for performance, it is located near the metropolis of Blankenburg in Harz. From 1808 onwards, the abbey was closed and began to be used for agricultural purposes, mainly to house workers, which led to the deterioration of the facilities. In 1968, the restoration plan began, which led to the founding of the Institute. Guided tours of the complex and the herb and vegetable gardens are offered annually, and you can also enjoy the museum with an incredible collection of musical instruments and then finish your visit in the music library located on the west side.

4. Dream as if you are in the clouds as you visit the impressive Luftfahrt und Techninik Museum

It is a gallery dedicated to the world of aviation located in the noble town of Wernigerode. It was opened on 1 June 1999 and in 2016 it founded two additional buildings with 2,100 square metres. The museum displays various aerospace exhibits, including helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and aircraft engines. In addition, there is a collection of ejection seats and cockpit sections. Inside the gallery, you will find 45 aircraft and over 1,000 items on display.

5. Meet the unique Halberstadt Cathedral

A Gothic-style church in Saxony-Ahalt that was established between 1236 and 1491 to replace the former Romanesque church. By 1591 the cathedral's bishop joined the Protestant Reformation and since then, the sanctuary has been used by the Protestant Church. During World War II, the church suffered severe damage but has been repaired in subsequent decades. Take a guided tour and see the cathedral's treasure trove of more than 600 art objects. Fortunately, the church still retains its medieval decoration and beautiful stained glass windows.
