Rabat is the capital of Morocco. It is located to the northwest, by the sea. It is one of the largest cities in the country, behind Casablanca. Its proximity to the Spanish coast (a little over 200 km) made it a fortified city as early as the 12th century. This explains its architecture and the layout of the city: the centre is located within the fortress. This does not make the centre a restricted area, quite the contrary. Long and wide avenues lined with palm trees criss-cross the city, which is very spread out.

Rabat is divided into several districts. Those where it is better to stay are located inside the walls of the old town.
