During 1805 and 1808 the British government built several artillery fortifications along the south-east coast, better known as 'Martello Towers'. The Dymchurch Martello Tower has been restored numerous times to resemble its original facade with a food store, garrison on the first floor, coal, water, ammunition and an incredible 24 pound gun on the roof. Located just behind the parish seawall.

3. Take a walk around the famous abandoned Camber Castle

It was built in 1512 on the orders of Henry VIII and is one of the first castles in England to defend the south coast ports. The name Camber derives from the French word dormitory, meaning safe haven. The fortress was chosen because the English fleet could anchor ships safely at the rear of the castle. However, this was not necessary. During World War II, it was used by the British army as a warning place. Today, the fort is a shell of its former grandeur and is situated within a nature reserve, allowing you to see seabirds, butterflies, marsh flowers and the rare bittern.

It opened on 16 July 1927 and is considered a tourist attraction due to its surrounding sandy beaches, amusement park and the Dymchurch station has two platforms connected by a footbridge, on the 'up' platform is the station master's house and shelter, and on the 'down' platform is a building housing a staff lounge, booking office, shop selling refreshments and souvenirs and the ladies' toilet; the gents' toilet is on the 'down' platform.
