• Car: Leave the A27 at Chichester and follow the B2145 south for around eight miles, straight through Hunston, Sidlesham and Highleigh into Selsey. The road ends at the sea, so it is hard to miss. • Train and bus: Take a South Western Railway or Southern service to Chichester, on the Portsmouth-to-Brighton coastal line with connections from London via Havant or Barnham. From Chichester bus station, the Stagecoach 51 runs regularly down the peninsula to Selsey in around 35 minutes, stopping on the high street a few minutes from the seafront.

1. Walk out to Selsey Bill

   The southernmost point of Sussex is a five-minute stroll from the town centre, where the shingle narrows and the Channel opens up in both directions. It is the best spot in Selsey for sunsets, and on calm days you can often pick out seals bobbing offshore or the Isle of Wight on the horizon. Wooden groynes step down the beach towards East Beach, making an easy circular walk back along the promenade. Bring binoculars and something warm, as the wind here rarely drops entirely.

2. Buy crab and lobster on East Beach

   Selsey still runs a working fishing fleet, and the boats are winched up onto the shingle at East Beach rather than into a harbour. The huts beside them sell the morning's catch: brown crab, lobster, prawns and whatever else has come up in the pots. It is about as direct as seafood gets in Britain, and a cracking excuse to cook in your letting. Turn up mid-morning for the best choice, and ask the crews when the boats went out.

   West of town, Medmerry is a huge stretch of new coastal wetland created when the sea wall was deliberately breached in 2013.
