Cycle to Plage des Sablères
The flat cycle path from Azur runs through the pines to Plage des Sablères, the northern beach at Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains and one of the quietest stretches of sand on this coast. It is wide, lifeguarded in summer and popular with surfers early in the day. Families with a villa here often ride out mid-morning, swim, then come back for lunch on the terrace. Bikes are easy to hire in the village, and the whole run takes well under half an hour at a child's pace.
-
Dinosaures Parc with the family
Dinosaures Parc in Azur is the obvious rainy-afternoon fix with younger children: life-sized models set among the trees, a maze, sandboxes and a guided tour that ends with a palaeontologist's diploma. It is more educational than it first looks, and the shaded paths make it bearable in August heat. Opening times run from Thursday to Sunday, so plan around them, and allow a couple of hours if your children want to finish the trail and the workshops properly.
-
Stand-up paddle at Supland
The calm water of the lake is the ideal place to try stand-up paddleboarding for the first time. Supland runs sessions for complete beginners as well as longer guided outings for anyone who has already found their balance, exploring the reed beds and quiet channels away from the main beach. The sensation is close to surfing but far more forgiving, which makes it a good family activity when the ocean is too rough for children to enjoy safely.
-
An afternoon in Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains
Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains pairs a clean town beach with a saltwater lake that is calm enough for small children, plus a surf club whose members have collected national longboarding titles. Spend the afternoon between the two, then walk into the centre for ice cream and a look round the summer market. Surfers chasing bigger swell often continue north to villas in Lacanau, but for a relaxed day with a young family this is the easier choice.
-
Lac de Léon by kayak
Lac de Léon, twenty minutes north, is one of the biggest lakes in the area and a favourite for windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking, including the famous descent of the Courant d'Huchet with a boatman. Walking trails circle much of the shoreline through oak and pine. If lakes and sheltered water are your thing, the Bassin d'Arcachon and its villas in Arcachon make a worthwhile longer excursion further up the coast.
-
Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne
An hour south in Bayonne, the Gothic Cathédrale Sainte-Marie is a UNESCO World Heritage listing on the pilgrim routes to Santiago, begun in 1213 and finished over three centuries. The stained glass and the cloister are the highlights, and entry is free. Combine it with the covered market, the chocolate makers on Rue Port Neuf and lunch by the Nive before driving back north for the evening.
-
A beach day at Plage d'Hendaye
Plage d'Hendaye is the longest sandy beach in the French Basque Country and, thanks to the bay, one of the calmest — which is why families with small children make the drive. There is space for volleyball, beginner surf lessons and paddleboarding, with restaurants along the promenade for afterwards. Many guests break the journey at our holiday lettings in Saint-Jean-de-Luz area for the harbour, the old town and a plate of grilled fish.
