1. Swim at Kalami Beach

   The bay's Blue Flag beach is a curve of pale pebbles with unusually clear water, sheltered on both sides by wooded headlands. It shelves gently enough for children and stays calm on all but the windiest days, which makes it a fine spot for snorkelling around the rocks at either end. Sunbeds and a couple of tavernas line the shore, and pedalos and paddleboards can be hired for an hour or an afternoon. Come early or after five to have the water almost to yourself.

2. Walk the coastal path to Agni

   A well-trodden footpath climbs out of Kalami and follows the coast south to Agni Bay, taking around forty minutes at an easy pace. The route passes through olive groves and cypress, with the Ionian Sea flashing below and the Albanian mountains opposite. Agni itself is little more than three tavernas on a shingle beach, which is precisely the appeal: swim, eat, then walk back in the cool of the evening. Take water and proper shoes, as parts of the path are loose underfoot.

3. Hire a boat for the day

   Small self-drive boats are available in Kalami and at nearby Agios Stefanos, and no licence is needed for the smallest engines. A day on the water opens up coves you simply cannot reach by road, including the tiny inlet at Kouloura with its Venetian harbour and the pebbled beaches below Nissaki. Pack a picnic, keep close to the shore, and moor up for lunch at a taverna jetty. Fuel is inexpensive and most operators supply a chart of the coastline.

4. Visit the Durrells' White House

   The low white building at the far end of the bay is where Lawrence Durrell lived in the late 1930s and wrote Prospero's Cell, and where his brother Gerald spent part of a Corfiot childhood later made famous on television. The ground floor is now a taverna and the upper floor has been kept much as it was, so you can look out from the same windows. It is a short, flat walk from anywhere in Kalami, and best combined with an early dinner.

5. Climb Mount Pantokrator

   Corfu's highest point rises to 906 metres directly behind the northeast coast, and the road up from Strinilas is a spectacular drive of hairpins and mountain villages. At the summit sit a monastery and, on a clear morning, a view stretching from Albania to the Diapontia islands. Walkers can take the marked trails from Nissaki or Petalia instead, allowing three to four hours. Set off early: the haze builds through the day and the car park fills by mid-morning.

6. Wander Corfu Town

   Forty minutes down the coast road, the UNESCO-listed old town is a warren of Venetian lanes, arcaded streets and shaded squares. Highlights include the Old Fortress, the Museum of Asian Art in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, and the cricket ground on the Liston. Stop for a ginger beer, the island's peculiar British legacy, and buy kumquat liqueur to take home. Parking is easiest near the New Port, from where everything is walkable.
