Fantastic rentals with sea views

Staying in Taormina is the synonym of having fantastic views from the comfort or your balcony or your terrace. Most touristic rentals are located in the historic centre, close to the castle, the Corvaia Palace, the Duomo and the beach, of course. The urban area of the city is quite small so you can look for rentals in the outskirts and head to centre while having a pleasant walk. Other coastal areas nearby are those of Castelmola, Mazzaro, Villagonia o Giardini-Naxos, offering great rental options and an ideal option for those looking for quality resting.

Splendid stays in exclusive properties

Outside the city is more likely to find bigger and exclusive properties with all kind of luxury amenities including hot tubs, swimming pools and lovely manicured gardens. Close to the beach, there are also many rentals with pools that will allow you gazing at the sea while having a dip. Isn’t that wonderful? Get up and go to bed admiring the sea and listening to the crashing waves. Enjoy the terrace and the comfortable lounges, the well decorated rooms and the equipped kitchen to enjoy a home away from home and make your holidays stand out and be memorable for years to come. Enjoy the company of your dearest ones: families, groups, couples will find a space to suit their needs.

The area and getting around

Italian beauty and glamour

Perched on the side of a mountain, on the east coast of Sicily, the small hilly town of Taormina sits halfway between Catania and Messina. The views of Etna Volcano, Mount Taurus and the surrounding nature, makes of Taormina a unique town with a special charm. A small and elegant town with lots of balconies decorated with the most colourful flowers, ancient ruins to visit and the views of the Ionian Sea. Honeymooners have been choosing it for years and tourists come to the town’s festival, the theatre season and the good dining.

Plenty of beautiful destinations around to explore

You can decide to stay just in Taormina or to take an excursion from a cruise ship. Look for day tours to Catania, Savoca, Etna or further afield. It is easy to move around in a car, by bus or by an arranged tour that will save you the hassle of arranging the transportation. Visit Castelmola, Giardini Naxos and enjoy long meals with the best Sicilian flavours. For more active trips, you can combine Taormina with a several-day tour around Sicily, a shorter one to Siracusa or Catania, or a trip to the stunning Aeolian islands. If you just need to change for a few days, spend a night or two in little villages off the beaten track to see the contrast and variety of the area.

Travellers and activities

Taormina for paradise beaches and secluded coves lovers

Taormina has plenty to see for those looking for something different. If you are not into big and crowded beaches and prefer small little corners or untouched nature, in Taormina you have the chance to find them and enjoy them. What makes it even more attractive is the fact that these places can only be reached by a vintage cable car covering the route between Mazzeo and Lido Spisone. If you jump on a boat, sail the coastline and find the most interesting and innermost corners to enjoy a quiet and peaceful day caressed by the gentle waves and blessed by the sun. The Amalfi Coast offers stunning landscapes and great spots for memorable experiences at the beach or at the little coves.

Taormina for history buffs

Taormina is a town with a rich historical heritage of priceless value. Undoubtedly, most of its monuments date from the Middle Ages, with the Duomo and Corvaja Palace being the most representative of this era. However, there are many others even older that are preserved in very good conditions, such as the Greek Theater (3rd century BC), the Odeon (1st century BC) or La Naumachia (also from the century I a. C). Plan your stay in Taormina and it will take you very little to reach them!

Italians talk of Taormina as the “Beautiful girl of Sicily”. We can imagine why!

Top 5 travel tips in Taormina

1. Book your theatre tickets

We are talking about a different kind of theatre. In Taormina you can enjoy a unique privilege of attending a show, performance or concert at an authentic Greek Theatre in a stunning setting where the mountains backdrop confers them a special touch. Due to its good estate of preservation, the theatre continues to host dance, music and theatre performances. Most of the events happen during the summer, when the weather is more friendly and the Taormina Arte Festival takes place. Especially advisable to attend a show at night time, when the place and lights blend in offering a unique and memorable experience. A few shows also take place at certain times of year.

2. Go for an island day tour

Spend a day in the small beautiful island of Isla Bella located in the bay of Taormina. To get to the island, you don’t need to get on a boat. Can you guess how you will be able to get to the shore of this unique tiny islet? Well, the answer is very simple. Wait for the tide to go low and cross over. That’s right! Just walk to the other side. Unless you cannot wait, there is the option to hire a boat and access the stunning paradise that offers this island. A natural oasis protected by the government, due to the great value of the natural places in it. So, if you visit it, be aware of this precious bit of land and leave nothing behind but footprints.

3. Go to Alcantara Gorge

A 50 minute drive from Taormina, you reach Alcantara Gorge. This place is of special interest because of the geology. The gorge is more than 82 feet high and about 10 feet wide. As we have mentioned, this narrow canyon is unique because of the formation of its walls. Those were the result of several lava flows, coming from Etna, more specifically, from the north slope of the volcano. When the lava and the ashes cooled down, in contact with the river they shaped what we see today. The waters in this area are extremely cold so only a few attempt to swim in them. Maybe you will fancy trying to do so.

4. Visit the Etna Volcano

No visit to Taormina is complete without a visit to the famous Etna Volcano. Starting in the city, there are many offers and tours to spend a day visiting this marvel of nature. The expedition takes you to the foot of the volcano and then, the guide and the driver, to take you to the crater with suitable SUVs after providing you with the proper equipment. This is by far the safest option to visit the Etna unless you prefer to drive there yourself. The volcano is a short 50 minute drive from Taormina. We highly recommend this visit!

5. Delicacies that can only be found in Taormina

For lunch or dinner, go to Ristorante Granduca Taormina. Enjoy the fabulous pizza, excellent fish-based recipes and raise your taste buds while enjoying the views and the shade of the lemon trees of the terrace. Drizzle some olive oil on the bread and save some room for pudding. You will not resist the temptation of its refreshing lemon slush served with Sicilian Cassata or hot buns. And for coffee lovers, Café Mocambo is where everybody enjoys a nice cafe like Elizabeth Taylor or Richard Burton did some years ago.
