What are the best hiking trails in Tenerife?

The jewel in Tenerife's crown is the 10.9 km Montaña Blanca to El Teide route, often considered the most challenging hiking trail in Tenerife. Along the way, you'll gain 1,371 m in elevation; as you ascend, you may start to find breathing difficult, as the oxygen is very thin towards the top of Mount Teide. This is a tough route which usually takes five to six hours. The good news is that once you reach the top, you can jump into a cable car for an easy route back down! Apart from Teide, there are a number of great routes for hiking in Tenerife. The 5 km Masca Gorge is one of the island's most scenic routes. It's tough going, scrambling over rocks as you follow the trail, but you'll finish up on Masca Beach, so you can jump into the sea for a quick dip to cool off. For an easier option, try the Siete Cañadas trail. Around 17 km long, this route takes you through the heart of rural Tenerife, and is particularly picturesque when the flowers are blooming in spring.

Where should I stay in Tenerife to be close to the best trails for hiking?

While most visitors concentrate in the southern part of the islands, around the most popular beach resorts, serious hikers should look for holiday lettings in Tenerife in the north. This is the quieter side of Tenerife, and will mean that you're closer to the island's best hiking trails. Staying in Puerto de la Cruz is a good option for a hiking trip to Tenerife. This charming, quiet town is close to both Teide National Park and Anaga Rural Park, where you'll find some of the most popular hikes. At night, there's none of the nightlife that can be so disturbing in the south. That means you'll get plenty of much-needed sleep before waking up to hit the trails!

FAQs: Hiking in Tenerife

What's the best time of year to go hiking in Tenerife?

Tenerife is very hot in summer, so hiking in the months of July or August is strongly discouraged. The rest of the year, the weather is mild and pleasant. That being said, it's probably best to plan your hiking trip for the spring or the autumn. In these seasons, the island's trails are at their most beautiful, with flowers blooming in spring or brilliant colourful foliage in September and October. Hiking in the winter months is possible, but Tenerife's mountainous interior does get rather chilly. What's more, there will be very few people around, which can lead to dangerous situations on the mountains.

Are the trails in Tenerife clearly signposted and safe?

Yes. There are three kinds of trail markings to look out for. Parallel lines in white and red indicate a GR or long-distance trail - a multi-day hike. White and yellow lines are for a PR or short-distance trail; this means a trail of under 50 km. Finally, there are white and green markers for a local trail or SL. These are less than 10 km long.

What hiking equipment will I need for a holiday in Tenerife?

If you plan to tackle Mount Teide or similar difficult routes, you will definitely need a sturdy pair of hiking boots. There are other, gentler hikes that you can manage in trainers or trekking sandals, but the route up Teide is demanding. Trekking poles are also a good idea. Bring a backpack with enough space for lots of water and food; in the interior of Tenerife, you may be hiking for hours with nowhere to stop for refreshments.

Can I hike in Tenerife with my family?

Yes, but you should stick to the gentler routes on the island. Teide National Park has some family-friendly paths, like the Roques de García route. This 3.5 km circuit gives you a taste of the volcanic landscape, with some eerie lava flows and monoliths, but it's gentle enough for even kids to tackle it. If you want to go to the top of Mount Teide with your children, take the cable car instead.

Are there any long-distance trails to try in Tenerife?

Yes. The GR131 is an 86 km multi-day hike that takes you from the north to the south of Tenerife. Its best section runs through the Anaga Forest, where you'll be blown away by the spectacular scenery. If you really want a challenge, you could walk the entirety of the GR131. Be warned that the full thing is 560 km long, and you'll need to take several ferries, as it runs across seven of the Canary Islands.
