1. Stroll the Finikoudes promenade

   The seafront at Finikoudes is where Larnaca gathers in the evening: a wide pavement under date palms, sand on one side and cafés on the other. Walk south and you reach Larnaca Castle, the squat medieval fort that once guarded the harbour and now hosts summer concerts in its courtyard. Come back for a morning swim before the sunbeds fill up, then take breakfast at one of the marina cafés. It is the easiest orientation walk in the city.

2. Spot flamingos at the Salt Lake

   Larnaca Salt Lake is a dry, cracked pan for much of the year, then fills with shallow water each winter. Between November and March thousands of flamingos stop here, and a wooden walkway lets you watch them without disturbing the birds. On the western shore stands Hala Sultan Tekke, a domed mosque set among palm trees and one of the most photographed buildings on the island. Bring binoculars and go early, when the light is low and the water is still.

3. Dive the Zenobia wreck

   The Zenobia, a ferry that sank off Larnaca in 1980, lies on its side in clear water and is regularly named among Europe’s best wreck dives. Visibility often reaches well beyond thirty metres, and the hull now shelters groupers, barracuda and shoals of bream. Local schools run guided dives for qualified divers from the marina, and non-divers can see the site from a glass-bottom boat. It is the single most memorable half-day Larnaca offers.

4. Visit the Church of Saint Lazarus

   The Church of Saint Lazarus anchors the old town, a stone basilica with a triple-domed roof and a bell tower you can see from the promenade. Its crypt holds the tomb associated with Lazarus, who tradition says settled in Kition after leaving Judaea. Inside, the carved gilt iconostasis is worth the visit on its own. Afterwards, wander the lanes behind the square towards the Kamares aqueduct, whose sandstone arches are floodlit after dark.

5. Buy lace in Lefkara

   Half an hour inland, Lefkara is a village of pale stone houses stacked along the hillside, famous for lefkaritika embroidery and for its silversmiths. Workshops still open onto the street, and you can watch the needlework being done before choosing a piece. The cobbled lanes are cool even in August, and a couple of tavernas serve slow-cooked lamb at shaded tables. It makes a relaxed morning out from any of our villas in Cyprus.

6. Escape into the Troodos foothills

   Drive west and the farmland gives way to the Troodos foothills, where vineyards climb terraced slopes and the temperature drops noticeably. Wine villages such as Vasa and Omodos pour indigenous grapes like Xynisteri and Maratheftiko, and many estates open their cellars to visitors. Continue and you can reach the coast at Limassol, where villas near the vineyards make a longer stay easy, or push on towards Paphos for the archaeological park.

7. Take a day trip east along the coast

   The road east from Larnaca runs past Cape Greco to the resort coast, roughly forty-five minutes away. Ayia Napa has the headline sand at Nissi and Konnos, sea caves to snorkel and a working fishing harbour; families often prefer the calmer bays around Protaras. If the drive tempts you into staying longer, there are villas in Ayia Napa and villas in Protaras within easy reach of the same beaches.
