1. Stroll the Avenida de las Playas promenade

   The Avenida de las Playas runs flat and traffic-free from Matagorda all the way into Puerto del Carmen, so you can leave the villa after dinner and walk for miles without crossing a road. In the late afternoon it fills with joggers, cyclists and families on scooters, and the ice cream kiosks stay open until late. It is the single easiest thing to do here with young children, and the walk back is lit the whole way.

   Playa de Matagorda and neighbouring Playa de los Pocillos together form a long run of golden sand with gentle water and sunbeds for hire.
