Activities: What are the top things to do and see in Playa Blanca?
- Swim at Playa Dorada
- Reach the Papagayo beaches
- Drive through Timanfaya
- Browse Marina Rubicón
- Walk the seafront promenade
- Sail across to Fuerteventura
- Follow the César Manrique trail
-
Swim at Playa Dorada
The town's flagship beach curves in a sheltered arc of pale sand just east of the centre, with water so calm that small children can paddle safely. Lifeguards, loungers and a shaded promenade of cafés make it an easy all-day base, and the Castillo del Águila watchtower on the headland gives you a short, rewarding walk when the sun softens. Most villa neighbourhoods sit within a ten-minute drive, so you can head back for a siesta by your own pool.
-
Reach the Papagayo beaches
A rough track east of town leads into the Los Ajaches natural park and its string of golden coves, of which Papagayo is the most famous. There are no hotels here, just cliffs, turquoise water and a couple of simple beach bars, so bring water and a parasol. A modest entry fee applies per car. Arrive early for the calmest sea and the best chance of a quiet corner, then picnic on the clifftop looking across to Fuerteventura.
-
Drive through Timanfaya
Half an hour north of Playa Blanca, Timanfaya National Park preserves the lava fields left by the eruptions of 1730 to 1736. A coach route winds through the Montañas del Fuego, past craters and ochre cinder cones, while rangers demonstrate the heat still trapped underground. Book the visit early in the day, as queues build quickly, and pair it with the vineyards of La Geria, where vines grow in volcanic hollows shielded by low stone walls.
-
Browse Marina Rubicón
Lanzarote's smartest yacht harbour sits a short stroll west of the centre, its white low-rise buildings ringed by restaurants, sailing schools and small boutiques. A craft market fills the quayside on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, and dive centres run trips out to the Museo Atlántico, the underwater sculpture museum in the bay. It is an easy, unhurried evening out for couples, with tables looking straight down onto the moored boats and the water.
-
Walk the seafront promenade
A level, well-kept path runs several kilometres along the coast, linking Marina Rubicón with Playa Dorada and continuing east to Playa Flamingo. It takes in small coves, rock pools and a working fishing harbour, and it is flat enough for pushchairs. Set off in the late afternoon and you will end the walk facing one of the island's best sunsets, with the outline of Fuerteventura sharpening on the horizon before dinner.
-
Sail across to Fuerteventura
Ferries leave Playa Blanca harbour throughout the day for Corralejo, crossing the strait in around half an hour. It is a genuinely easy day trip: on the other side you will find the vast dunes of the Corralejo natural park and a lively old harbour full of seafood terraces. Foot passengers pay considerably less than car passengers, and taxis wait at the port, so many families leave the hire car parked at the villa.
-
Follow the César Manrique trail
Lanzarote's most famous artist and architect shaped much of what you see across the island. From Playa Blanca you can reach the Jameos del Agua lava tunnels, the cactus garden at Guatiza and the clifftop viewpoint of Mirador del Río in a single long day, or take them one at a time. If you would rather build a whole trip around them, our villas across Lanzarote put you closer to the northern sites.
