1. Explore Bamburgh Castle

   Towering over the village on its basalt crag, Bamburgh Castle is one of England's most dramatic coastal fortresses. It has been rebuilt and remodelled over the centuries, and the staterooms, armoury and grounds are well worth a visit. Climb towards the ramparts for sweeping views over the dunes, the village and out to the Farne Islands, then explore the archaeology museum.

2. Relax on the white-sand beaches

   Bamburgh Beach and neighbouring St Aidan's Beach offer miles of clean white sand backed by grassy dunes, all beneath the castle's gaze. It is an idyllic spot for building sandcastles and flying kites. The braver can surf — the bay catches a decent swell across most of the tide. A little further north, the empty three-kilometre sweep of Ross Back Sands is perfect for a walk with views of Holy Island.
