Dive the Malgrats Islands
The little islands off the western headland are a protected marine reserve, and the clear water around them is the reason Santa Ponsa has a diving scene at all. Centres in the resort, including ZOEA, run try-dives, courses and guided snorkelling trips out to the reef, where grouper and shoals of bream are easy to spot. Boats leave from the bay and most trips take a morning, so you are back at the apartment for lunch. Kayaks and paddleboards can be hired on the beach if you would rather stay on the surface.
-
Climb the courses at Jungle Parc
Jungle Parc sits in nine hectares of pine forest on the edge of the resort, with treetop circuits strung between more than a hundred platforms and a run of zip lines through the canopy. Harnesses and a safety briefing are included, and the routes are graded so nervous first-timers and confident teenagers can go round together. There is a separate junior park for four to eleven-year-olds. Allow two to three hours, wear trainers, and book ahead in August when slots fill quickly.
-
Cool off at Western Water Park
Twelve minutes west near Magalluf, Western Water Park is the biggest of the south-west's water parks, laid out in three cowboy-themed zones around a wave pool and a cluster of slides. The kamikaze drop known as The Beast is the one everyone queues for, while shaded toddler pools keep smaller children happy. There are picnic areas if you would rather bring food from your apartment, plus fast food and an ice cream parlour on site. A full day out, and easy on the bus.
-
Catch sunset at the Mirador del Cañón
The viewpoint on the headland west of the beach looks straight out over the Malgrats Islands and the open Balearic Sea, and it is open around the clock. It is a twenty-minute walk up from the promenade, or a two-minute drive with parking on the road above. Come in the last hour of daylight, when the water turns copper and the islands become silhouettes. Bring a jacket outside high summer, as the breeze on the headland is stronger than it feels down in the bay.
-
Shop along the Paseo Marítimo
Santa Ponsa's seafront promenade is where the resort spends its evenings, a level walk past souvenir shops, boutiques, sandal stalls and cafés with the bay on one side. It is a good place to pick up beach kit you forgot to pack, and the Saturday market in nearby Calvià village is worth the short drive for local cheese, olives and leather. Most shops stay open late through summer, so an after-dinner wander is normal rather than a rush before closing.
-
Join the Festa del Rei en Jaume I
Every September the resort restages the landing of King Jaume I with a week of processions, concerts and street food, ending in a mock battle between Moors and Christians on the beach itself. Locals dress for their parts, the promenade fills, and the whole thing is free to watch. If you are staying in an apartment near the seafront you will hear it before you see it. Book well ahead for those dates, as the bay is at its busiest.
-
Hike to La Trapa from Sant Elm
Under an hour north-west, the fishing village of Sant Elm is the trailhead for the walk up to the ruined monastery of La Trapa, with terraced hillsides, cliff-edge viewpoints and the island of Sa Dragonera across the water. The full loop is long and exposed, so carry water and start early; a shorter out-and-back to the first viewpoint still earns the view. Finish with a seafood lunch on the seafront at Sant Elm before driving back. If you fancy more coastal walking, apartments in Cala d'Or sit near a very different stretch of shore.
