Six kilometres long, this trail will introduce you to the magic of this fantastic forest, passing heathland and wood pasture as well as some incredible ancient oaks.

One of the UK’s top destination for family adventures, there is something for every child in Sherwood, be they Robin Hood fans, bug spotters, or young nature lovers. Throughout the year events are staged including guided walks, costumed characters, bug hunts and competitions, as well as seasonal events such as the enchanting moonlit Sparkling Sherwood, when the forest is lit up with thousands of glistening fairy lights to welcome in the Christmas holidays.

Sherwood Forest Activity Centre offers fantastic adrenaline-fuelled days out in the forest. Pick from a wide variety of fun activities including quad biking, archery, paintball and laser tag. On top of this, the UK’s national centre for watersports is just down the road, where you can try windsurfing, kayaking and other fun-filled activities!

As soon as you arrive in Sherwood Forest, pop into Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre to get full information on the myriad sights and sounds awaiting you in the area. The centre is an attraction in its own right, with fun activities, and exhibits on the history of Robin Hood.

Every August the woods play host to the Robin Hood Festival, a fun-fuelled week-long festival with loads to keep your kids entertained throughout the day in wonderful natural surroundings. Re-enactments, song, storytelling, sword-fighting, archery and more!

Sherwood is near to the historic towns of Newark and Southwell. Newark is steeped in history, home to one of the most impressive Georgian market squares in the country and an imposing castle. Southwell is another gorgeous market town, with a pedestrianised centre that is a delight to walk around crown.

Wollaton Hall and Park comprises extensive grounds, an industrial museum, a historic mansion and giant play area for children. A fascinating destination for the adults and a great place for the kids to run around and have fun! Fun fact: a batman movie was shot here!

The Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre is home to a gift shop selling locally made products such as crockery, bags, candles and conserves. There are also all sorts of Robin Hood memorabilia to choose from including bows and arrows, wooden swords and little Robin Hood and Friar Tuck teddy bears.

The Major Oak is one of the forest’s most popular sights. It is a truly spectacular tree boasting a trunk 10 metres in circumference which is over 1,000 years old! Rumour has it that it was Robin’s hiding place when he was being followed by the authorities!

The visitor centre holds free of charge archery events in the tourist seasons and school holidays. Meet your favourite Robin Hood characters and learn both how to make and use a bow and arrow and you can even try your hand at archery!
