FAQs: Pet-friendly holidays in Tenerife
What's the best time of year to take my dog to Tenerife?
Tenerife is blessed with an amazing climate that makes it a year-round holiday destination. Even in winter, there's lots of sunshine, with daily averages of around 17°C in December and January. Summers are not as scorching as they are in many parts of mainland Spain, and even in August - the hottest month of the year - the daily average tends to stay to a bearable 24°C. This means that you can take a dog-friendly holiday in Tenerife at any time of year. You might prefer to avoid the peak summer months of July and August, as that's when Tenerife is at its most crowded. Similarly, it may be wise to avoid the island during the annual carnival at the end of winter. The noisy parades and nightly fireworks can really upset dogs.
Where are the best dog beaches around Tenerife?
In most of Spain, all beaches permit dogs to come and splash around during the off-peak months. That's not true in Tenerife; even in winter, your dog will not be allowed on many of the island's beaches. However, there are some dog beaches in Tenerife for you and your pooch to discover together. Güimar, El Confital and El Cabezo are all dog-friendly beaches. These three may not be what you're expecting from a beach holiday: like many parts of the Canary Islands, they have black, volcanic sand. However, they're every bit as pleasant as their white sand counterparts. As well as being a dog-friendly beach, El Cabezo is a good choice for stand-up paddleboarding, and there are several centres nearby that will let you hire equipment.
Where can I find dog parks in Tenerife?
The fun doesn't stop at the beach! There are some excellent dog parks in Tenerife where your pup can play, let off steam and socialise with some new furry friends. The best is the Ana Bautista dog park in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the island. This is a spacious, modern park with plenty of agility equipment for energetic dogs to try out. Santa Cruz boasts two more dog parks, La Granja and Las Delicias, which are both worth checking out. You can also visit Montillo Park in La Matanza in north Tenerife. This park also has playground facilities for kids, so it's best for well-behaved dogs.
Are there dog-friendly restaurants and cafés in Tenerife?
Most restaurants and cafés in Spain will not allow dogs in the dining room, but they will let you sit with your pooch on the terrace. As almost all eateries in Tenerife have a terrace, and it hardly ever rains, this is a pretty good option! In the town of Los Cristianos, you'll find Azul Flojito, which is renowned as Tenerife's most dog-friendly restaurant. Here, dogs are allowed inside the dining room, and will even be offered a bowl of water. It's become very popular with dog owners, so you may need to book in advance, particularly at the weekends.
Are there any laws about dogs in public in Tenerife?
Yes. Your dog should be on a lead in public, except in specific, designated areas. Some breeds must also wear a muzzle. Never leave home without bags for cleaning up after your pet, as you can be fined if you don't pick up his poo! In fact, this is something that the Spanish take very seriously. You should also bring a squirty bottle of water with you on walks. Use it to quickly rinse any spots that your dog cocks his leg on, to avoid upsetting the neighbours - or worse, receiving a fine.
