Holidays in Grenoble

Location and orientation

The capital of the Alps

Grenoble is a municipality of Isère with a population of about 160,000 inhabitants. It is the third most populated city in its Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region behind {{Lyon}{17534} and Saint-Etienne and the thirteenth largest in France. Grenoble is called the capital of the Alps because it is the most populated alpine metropolis in front of Innsbruck. In addition, it is only 70 kilometres from the Italian border and is surrounded by several municipalities, including Echirolles to the south, Gières to the east and La Tronche to the north of its territory.

A family ski resort

We speak of the Grenoble basin to designate the particular geographical configuration of its agglomeration. It is located in a plain at the confluence of the Isère and the Drac rivers and covers an area of just over 18 square kilometres. Its location explains its significant thermal amplitudes, heavy rainfall and consequent sunshine.

A destination for nature lovers

The hikes

They are not necessarily on the program of the tourist guides but they offer unforgettable sensations! These are the hikes for the general public that we encourage you to do during your holidays in Grenoble. The great tour by the greenways is essentially by bike, it takes you along the banks of the Drac river and guarantees a beautiful stroll in the capital of the Alps. The ascent of Mont Rachais from Lachal is an exotic walking itinerary that will offer you several beautiful views.

Activities at Lake Laffrey

You won't be bored for a second at Lake Laffrey! A nautical base rents boats and pedal boats, and there is also a sailing school that offers dinghies and catamarans. Not far from there, the Air Park is a delight for those who are passionate about tree climbing.

Grenoble hosted the 1968 Winter Olympic Games.

Top 5 things to do

Notre-Dame Cathedral and Saint-Hugues Church

From the outside, only the imposing bell tower-porch attracts the attention of travellers. The attraction of this building is only realized after entering it. First of all, there is the Museum of the Ancient Diocese where several remarkable works are exhibited. Then the decorations decorate the back of the nave of the Saint-Hugues church, with sublime white marble baptismal font. In the cathedral, you will also find the carved wooden pulpit and chapels, other places where you can meditate.

The Grenoble Museum

It houses superb collections of art and antiques. During your visit, take a look at the rooms dedicated to the 17th century, where you will find works by French, Italian, Spanish and Flemish painters. The 19th century Dauphinoise school is also featured in this museum with paintings by Ernest Hébert, Charles Bertier and Laurent Guétal.

Tasting of regional culinary specialities

Your stay will necessarily be a success in terms of cuisine if you go to one of Grenoble's good restaurants. You will certainly enjoy a gratin dauphinois, a recipe that perfectly enhances melting potatoes. A cheese lover will not fail to taste the delicious sassenage blue, while the most gourmet will conclude their lunch or dinner with a piece of nut cake.

The Archaeological Museum

It is located at the foot of the Bastille hill and offers you some very beautiful discoveries if you are a history buff. You will be able to see the vast majority of the collections resulting from the excavations, with a large number of coins, pottery and various objects of daily life dating from late antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Snow sports in Chamrousse

Chamrousse's ski slopes are only about thirty kilometres from the city centre. This is why they are widely acclaimed by Grenoble residents during the winter. This resort has 92 kilometres of alpine skiing, more than 40 kilometres of cross-country skiing and accessible mountain bike trails during the summer season.
