Location and orientation
Le Grand-Bornand is one of the most famous winter sports resorts in France. Located at an altitude of nearly 1000 metres, in the very centre of the Aravis Massif, it is in the immediate vicinity of other municipalities renowned for their ski areas such as Megève, Habère-Poche and Albertville. It takes a little less than an hour's drive to reach Le Grand-Bornand from Annecy or Geneva, the two nearest major cities.
An easily accessible stationThe Grand-Bornand and the Aravis Mountains in general are served by the A40 and A41 motorways. To get there by train, take a ticket to Annecy and book a place on the shuttle bus that runs every day in high season to the resort.
Destination for athletes
It is possible to practice downhill and cross-country skiing in Grand-Bornand, but also biathlon, sledging, snowshoeing and new sliding sports such as snowscoot. The resort has a large snowpark dedicated to snowtrotting, snowboarding and freestyle skiing.
A station accessible to all levelsLe-Grand-Bornand has twelve green, fourteen blue, thirteen red and three black runs. One evening a week, usually on Tuesdays, it is possible to practice night skiing, the resort remaining open until late in the evening.
Although the resort was created in 1907, it was not until the 1950s that it developed into a popular destination.
Top 3 things to do
In summer, this crossing point between the Valleys of Le Reposoir and Le Grand-Bornand offers spectacular views of the massif. It can be ridden on foot or, for ambitious cyclists, by mountain bike. It is also regularly visited by participants in the Tour de France.
2. Visit Our Lady of the AssumptionThis small mountain church was built in the twelfth century and partially rebuilt and restored over the years. Although of modest size, it stands out clearly with its bulb-shaped bell tower.
3. Enjoy a piece of reblochonGrand-Bornand is also an agricultural commune where the famous reblochon has been made since the Middle Ages. This is the opportunity to buy this delicious cheese directly from the producer.
