Bergamo is a Lombard province situated in a foothill area, between the plain and the Pre-Alps. In the province of Bergamo you will find Lake of Iseo (with the highest lake island in Europe, Monte Isola) and the small Lake Endine, while the town of Lecco and Lake of Como are less than an hour away. The Bergamo valleys (Seriana, Brembana, Imagna, Scalve and Calepio) offer diversified landscapes that in all seasons allow you to spend hours of relaxation and fun, including sports, activities and good food.

City beauties

Bergamo is divided into two distinct parts, the Upper Town, ancient and surrounded by walls of the sixteenth century (it is one of the few Italian cities to have preserved them intact), and the Lower Town, which over the years has assumed a more modern aspect. The medieval Upper Bergamo has its fulcrum in Old Square, with the Contarini fountain, the Civic Tower (or Bell) and the Palace of Reason. Near the square are the Cathedral of St. Alexander, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (with inlays by Lorenzo Lotto) where Donizetti is buried, the Colleoni Chapel and Piazza della Cittadella, the square of museums (the Civic Archaeological and Natural Sciences). The Lower Town, however, was born from the development of some villages that led from the hills to the plain. The central district was built in the early years of the twentieth century by Marcello Piacentini, who designed the institutional buildings still present. Older are the Donizetti Theatre (1800), the church of Saints Bartholomew and Stephen and the church of the Holy Spirit, which houses tables by Lorenzo Lotto.

Children will certainly not miss a visit to the Le Cornelle wildlife park or Leolandia, the amusement park (which also houses a beautiful Italy in miniature) in Capriate San Gervasio. A hamlet of Capriate, the Crespi d'Adda Village is an example of industrial architecture declared a World Heritage Site. In addition, in many locations (including Selvino and Gromo) there are fun adventure parks for the whole family, while in Maslana there is a floro-fauna observatory where you can see wild animals and - on opening days - the beautiful waterfalls of the Serio.

Borgo Canale

This village in the lower town is situated in a position rich in panoramic views, which allow the gaze to sweep between the plain and the upper town. It is a quiet area, with narrow streets and the birthplace of the composer Gaetano Donizetti, turned into a museum. At the entrance of the village is the funicular that leads to Bergamo Alta, on the hill of San Vigilio.

Colleoni Chapel

It is a majestic building, with a Renaissance facade of red and white marble and an interior that houses many works of art, including the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, inlaid marble sarcophagi and carved wood. Legend has it that touching the heraldic symbol on the gate at midnight brings good luck.

Palace of Reason

The ancient seat of the Municipality (which owes its name, however, to use as a court by the Venetians) is a wonderful example of medieval architecture, damaged several times and rebuilt without modification. The loggia houses the Gnomon, a sundial built in 1798: through a ray of sunshine it hits the sundial engraved on the floor marking exactly the date and noon.
