Everything you need to know about the Marche region
Holidays in the Marche region are for everyone
Situated on the mid-Adriatic side of central-eastern Italy, the Marches border on Abruzzo to the south-east, Lazio to the south-west, Umbria to the west, Toscana to the north-west and Emilia Romagna to the north. The territory of the region is very varied, characterised by the presence of mountains, hills and a long coastline that houses beautiful beaches of both sand and gravel. Booking a holiday letting in the Marche region means, therefore, being able to choose from many types of activities, from swimming in the sea, to mountaineering, to trekking, not to mention the historical-artistic tours in the many places in the region. For the more courageous we recommend the climb of the Red Blades to Fiastra, a real canyon from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view.
How to get there: the region can be easily reached by car from both the north and south of Italy with the A14 Bologna - Taranto motorway, which crosses it; it is also possible to get there by train, thanks to the presence of a dense railway network and more than 60 stations. Most airlines land at the international airport Ancona-Falconara, connected by scheduled flights to several Italian and foreign cities: the airport is about 15 km from the capital, which can be reached by train, bus or taxi. The port of Ancona is also one of the most important on the Adriatic and from here ferries depart for Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Albania and Montenegro. For those who want to arrive by boat, there are also marinas in the region in Gabicce Mare, Senigallia, Pesaro, Fano, Civitanova Marche, Numana, Porto San Giorgio and San Benedetto del Tronto. There are also several bus lines that connect the Marches with many cities in Italy.
Holidays in the Marches: events and parties in every season
The climate of the Marches varies according to the area: on the coast it is characterised by hot summers, but cooled by the sea breeze, and quite cold winters; in the hilly and mountainous areas the climate becomes more rigid and the presence of snow is regular, which makes the region the ideal destination for winter sports enthusiasts. We recommend a visit in December to those who want to attend the ancient feast of the Venuta, of medieval origin.
But there are also important folklore events in the other months of the year, especially in summer, in August, such as the Cavalcata dell'Assunta in Fermo, the Quintana in Ascoli and the Contesa del bucchio in Sant'Elpidio a Mare. There are also many festivals in which you can enjoy the culinary specialties of the Marche: do not miss the olives ascolane, vincisgrassi, an exquisite variant of lasagna, stockfish anconetana, snails all'urbinate, the crescia sfogliata and, among the regional wines, the Verdicchio di Jesi.
Did you know that Valentino Rossi is from the Marche region? The great champion of Italian motorcycling was born in Urbino on 16 February 1979.
