1. Wander Mojácar Pueblo at golden hour

   The old village is a knot of steep, whitewashed lanes hung with geraniums and bougainvillea. Climb to the Mirador del Castillo for views stretching from the Sierra Cabrera to the sea, then work your way down past the fortress-like church of Santa María, the Puerta de la Ciudad and the Fuente Mora, where women once did the village washing. Late afternoon is the moment: the light turns the walls gold, the day-trippers have gone, and the small squares fill with locals.

2. Swim the coves of Cabo de Gata

   An hour south lies Cabo de Gata, a volcanic natural park of cliffs, salt flats and some of the clearest water in Spain.
