Travellers and activities

The Alps for skiing lovers

The Alps are known for having more skiing areas than anywhere else in the world and if you're a ski enthusiast you shouldn't miss the chance to come and enjoy a whole day in the snow. Start at the Molltal Glacier in Austria and access the resort via an underground funicular railway, the longest in the world. The slopes are open throughout winter and there are three levels of difficulty for beginners and experts in the sport.

The Alps for wildlife lovers

The home of lakes and green spaces has a name: the Alps. Hiking and running trails, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding, gardens, cable cars and paragliding. To make the most of your visit, not only in winter time, you can visit the spectacular Worthersee Lake and swim, take a boat trip or admire the different species of fish that live there. Worthersee, the capital of Carinthia, is located on the shores of the lake.

Did you know that the highest peak in the Alps is Mont Blanc? It has an altitude of 4807.81 metres above sea level. It is the highest point in the European Union and among the five highest in Europe

Top 7 travel tips in the Alps

1. Visit the historic Hohensalzburg Fortress

It is one of the most characteristic monuments of the city and the largest and best preserved castle in Europe. It was built from 1077 under Prince and Archbishop Gebhard von Helffenstein, who enlarged and reinforced it with towers, walls and trenches. In the 15th century, the fortress was given its present appearance by Prince and Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, who decorated it in an exquisite Gothic style and made it habitable. The fortress was attacked on several occasions, but was never taken. The guides will take you through every corner of the castle, and you can listen to the story of "The Salburg Bull Washer"

2. Take a stroll around the well-known Lake Wolfgang

It is situated on the shores of the market town of St. Wolfgang in Austria. The lake and the town are named after St. Wolfgang of Regensburg, who according to legend built the first church here in the 10th century. The lake stretches 10.5 kilometres from southeast to northwest and covers an area of 13.1 square kilometres. The towns around the lake are very popular during summer

3. Test your adrenaline in the unique Eisriesenwelt

A series of caves in Salzburg discovered by the Salzburg naturist Anton von Posselt-Czorich in 1879. It has a length of 42 kilometres and is therefore the largest ice cave in the world, well known to hikers. To visit it, you must be accompanied by a guide and the entrance is at an altitude of 1,640 metres above sea level. You will pass through the ice palace, the underground tunnel and a steep gallery

4. Get to know the luxurious Salzburg Cathedral

It is a baroque style building dating back to the 17th century, located in the central part of the so-called Old Town and consecrated to Saint Rupert of Salzburg who founded the metropolis. The church was erected in 767. During the Second World War, it was severely damaged by a bomb falling on the dome. The incredible Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised in this beautiful cathedral

5. Discover the world of jewellery at the spectacular Swarovski Kristallwelten

It is an attraction created for the Swarovski crystal manufacturer by André Heller that includes an art museum, a park, a restaurant and a shopping area. It was founded in 1995 and is located in Austria. The Swarovski fine jewellery company is owned by the renowned Daniel Swarovski who opened in 1895 and to celebrate the centenary of the brand the artist André was commissioned to design a museum with fourteen chambers of wonders based on the shape of a giant. Inside the gallery there are 17 exhibition spaces and each artist, architect or designer has a chamber of wonder in which they use the crystals for their own thematic focus

6. Admire the most beautiful Krimml Falls

At 380 metres high they form the highest waterfall in Austria. The falls are formed by the Kirmmler Ache river and are located in the village of Krimml in the state of Salzburg. The upper part of the waterfall can be seen by entering the access road from the town of Mittersill

7. Chillon Castle

A Swiss fortress with medieval origins on the shores of Lake Geneva with a very peculiar shape, oblong, 25 metres high and 50 metres wide, it has been preserved since the Bronze Age. Since the Bronze Age, it has been an important defensive fortress, which was later fortified by the Romans. It is a historic monument for the country, whose halls served as a source of inspiration for the English poet Byron. It is worth noting that it did not only inspire Lord; from the 18th century onwards it attracted the most romantic writers of the time from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to Victor Hugo, so much so that the latter said: "Chillon is a massif of towers on a massif of rocks". Today, the Gothic style area is the best preserved part of the château.
