Amalfi's cathedral is a melange of different architectural styles, built mainly in the 13th century, to house the relics of St Andrew apostle. Admire the Arabic-Norman exteriors, the Baroque interiors, the huge bronze doors and the mosaics. Climb up the 65 steps and see what it's like from the heights. From 10 am to 5 pm you can only enter the cathedral through the Chiostro del Paradiso. Book your holiday rental and letting in Amalfi and prepare your visit to the cathedral.

3. Chiostro del Paradiso, the access to the cathedral

On the left of the cathedral's porch you can see these Moorish-style cloisters from the 13th century. Here there are buried several important citizens of that, surrounded by the marble columns, arches and a beautiful garden. There is also the Basilica del Crocefisso, with several frescoes and reliquary heads. During the day, the access to the cathedral is only through here.

4. Visit the Grotta dello Smeraldo

Just a couple of miles west of Amalfi, the waters of a grotto are an intense emerald green colour. The stalactites, up above, hang down from the tall ceiling, and the stalagmites rise up high, giving the grotto a unique charm. You can reach the grotto by bus or by boat from Amalfi. A curious thing about this grotta is the underwater presepe (nativity scene) made from local ceramics and submerged 4m beneath the surface. On 24 December and 6 January every year, skin-divers flock over here for the traditional pilgrimage to admire the presepe.

5. A Michelin star experience

No trip is complete until the culinary traditions have been experienced. Italy is well known for its cuisine of fresh products, olive oil and quality meats and fish. The MIchelin-starred restaurant La Caravella, is still in a humble and quiet spot of Amalfi, and true to its roots. The combination of excellent products together with creativity obtain artsy dishes that will raise your taste buds and alert your senses. There is a seven course tasting menu with excellent bites but you can also have a la carte menus, including some of their great dishes such as fish with fennel, anchovy croquettes and the Mona Lisa, a delicious lemon soufflé. Needles to say that every meal is paired with the best Italian wines. Book a villa in Amalfi and do not miss its best dishes.

There is a former paper mill from the 13th century that was refurbished and turned into a museum. The origins of paper are documented in several texts you can find about in the Library. Several paper presses are still preserved and able to function. You can see them taking the tour. If you like this kind of activities, we recommend renting an apartment in Sorrento, a place where you will find a wide variety of museums with very interesting stories.
