1. Swim at Cala Deià

   A steep 25-minute walk (or a short drive plus a scramble) takes you down through olive terraces to Cala Deià, a pebbled cove of startlingly clear water hemmed in by cliffs. Bring water shoes, because the shore is stone rather than sand, and swim out a little for the best view back at the village. Two seafront kitchens serve grilled fish and cold drinks straight from the rocks, and the cove is at its calmest early in the morning before the day-trippers arrive.

2. Tour Son Marroig

   Perched on the cliffs just outside the village, Son Marroig was the estate of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, who spent decades documenting the Balearics. Inside you'll find his collections, period furniture and old photographs; outside, a white Carrara marble rotunda looks straight down at the sea. It is a short, easy visit that pairs well with a coffee afterwards, and the gardens are a favourite spot for photographs of the coastline stretching towards Sa Foradada.

3. Walk a stretch of the GR221

   The GR221, the Dry Stone Route, runs the length of the Serra de Tramuntana and passes right through Deià. You don't need to tackle the whole thing: the section to Sóller takes around three hours, mostly on old mule paths shaded by olive and carob trees, with the sea below for much of the way. Spring and autumn are ideal; in high summer set off early. Sturdy shoes and plenty of water are essential.

4. Ride the Sóller tram

   Ten minutes from Deià, the town of Sóller runs a wooden tram from its main square down to the port, rattling past orange groves and garden walls on a line that opened in 1913. It is short, slow and thoroughly enjoyable, especially with children. Combine it with the vintage train over the mountains from Palma for a full day out, or simply ride down for lunch by the bay and browse the holiday lettings in Port de Sóller for a longer stay.

5. Follow the Robert Graves trail

   The poet and novelist Robert Graves settled in Deià in 1929, and his house, Ca N'Alluny, is now a museum kept much as he left it, with his desk, printing press and garden. It explains a great deal about why writers, painters and musicians have gravitated here ever since. His grave lies in the small hillside cemetery beside Sant Joan Baptista church, which also rewards the climb with a fine view over the rooftops.

6. Watch sunset at Sa Foradada

   The Mirador de Sa Foradada looks out at a rocky peninsula with a natural hole punched clean through it, one of the most photographed silhouettes on the island. You can admire it from the roadside viewpoint in a few minutes, or walk the 45-minute track down to the headland for a swim and a plate of paella at the restaurant there. Time it for late afternoon, when the light turns the cliffs deep gold.

7. Day trip to Pollença

   About an hour north, Pollença offers a Roman bridge, a Sunday market and the 365 steps of the Calvari climbing to a hilltop chapel. It makes an easy change of scene from the west coast, with a wide choice of restaurants around the main square and beaches at nearby Port de Pollença.
