1. Climb to the Mamma Mia! chapel

   The tiny white chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri perches on a rock stack on the north-east coast, reached by 198 steps cut into the stone. It became famous as the wedding chapel in Mamma Mia!, filmed here and on neighbouring Skiathos, but the climb earns its own reward: at the top there is a walled courtyard, a hard blue drop to the sea and a view back along the forested shoreline. Go early or late, when the steps are cooler and the light is at its best.

   The island capital rises from the ferry harbour like an amphitheatre — tier upon tier of whitewashed houses with grey slate roofs, wooden balconies and bougainvillea spilling over the walls. The lanes are pedestrian and deliberately confusing, which is half the pleasure; you climb, lose your bearings and emerge at a chapel or a viewpoint over the bay. Come down to the waterfront in the evening, when the shops stay open late and the harbourside tables fill up.

3. Swim at Milia and Panormos

   Milia is the beach most islanders name first: a long sweep of pale pebbles backed by pines, with water that shades from turquoise to deep blue. A short drive south, Panormos offers a more sheltered bay with a paddleboarding centre and calm conditions that suit families and less confident swimmers. Between the two you will find smaller coves signposted off the coast road — worth pulling over for if you have a car and an afternoon to spare.

4. Look out from Glossa

   The island's second town sits high on a mountainside about 25 kilometres north-west of the capital, built in tiers among almond and pine trees. Glossa is noticeably quieter than Skopelos Town, and that is the point: balconies hang over a long drop to the sea, cats sleep in the lanes and the tavernas are filled largely with locals. Below it, the little port of Loutraki is a pleasant walk or short drive down for a swim and a coffee.

5. Taste the Skopelos cheese pie

   The island's signature dish is a coil of thin filo wrapped around soft local cheese, then fried until it puffs and blisters — nothing like the baked tiropita found elsewhere in Greece. Every bakery and taverna in Skopelos Town and Glossa makes its own version, and locals will happily argue about whose is best. Order one warm with a coffee at breakfast, or pick a few up on the way to the beach; they travel well and disappear quickly.

6. Sail to the neighbouring islands

   Skippered day trips leave Skopelos Town harbour for the surrounding waters, which form part of a protected marine park — dolphin sightings are common and monk seals are occasionally spotted. Boats stop at bays reachable only from the sea, usually with lunch on board. It is also the easy way to see Alonissos and Skiathos in a day, and plenty of visitors extend the idea into a longer hop around the Sporades.

7. Walk the monastery trails

   Old stone paths, or kalderimia, link the monasteries scattered across the hills above Skopelos Town — Evangelistria, Metamorphosis and Prodromos among them.
