Holidays in Camargue

Location and orientation

A natural region spread over two departments

The Camargue is a natural region in the south of France, located in the Bouches-du-Rhône and Gard regions. It can be divided into three distinct areas, each of which contains beautiful holiday rentals. On the one hand, it is the Camargue Gardoise, symbolized by the municipalities of {{Vauvert}{13790} and Saint-Gilles. It is also the Grande Camargue, a space delimited between the Grand-Rhône to the east and the Petit-Rhône to the west. The plan of the village to the east with the municipality of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône constitutes the third region of the Camargue.

The landscapes of salt marshes and rice cultivation

The Camargue is characterised by its unique biodiversity, which is recognized by the authorities and allows it to be classified as a Regional Natural Park. The landscapes of the north are mainly marked by rice cultivation, those of the south are represented in a formidable way by the salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes and Salin-de-Giraud. These two environments are separated by the peripheral marshes of the pond of Vaccarès but other places will amaze you, like the beaches of Beauduc and Piemanson.

Activities for sports enthusiasts

Nautical pleasures on the Mediterranean coast

Water sports enthusiasts will no longer know where to turn their heads at Grau-du-Roi. We practice trendy disciplines such as flyfish and stand-up paddle. You also have the opportunity to spend a pleasant time outdoors with your loved ones during a kayak trip.

A quad ride

Several clubs invite you to discover the fascinating landscapes of the Camargue on a quad. These outings have the advantage of being supervised by a guide and are therefore suitable for all families. The activity is of course carried out in compliance with the regulations in force but above all with those of the natural environment.

Horse rides

Equestrian rides around the lake of Vacarès never disappoint the holidaymakers! They allow you to get as close as possible to the preserved fauna and flora of this region. Experienced riders have the opportunity to experience thrills while galloping along the seaside.

The Camargue is made up of 25% agricultural areas and more than 40% of humid natural areas.

Top 5 things to do

The Church of the Saintes-Maries

This Romanesque building was completed in the 12th century. Its bell tower wall is one of its remarkable features, as is its crypt where an altar and a statue of Sara the Black are on display. One of the most emblematic monuments of the town and more generally of the Camargue.

The Arena of Arles

Rome has its coliseum, Arles has its arenas! This Roman amphitheatre obviously does not enjoy the popularity of the Italian monument, but it arouses the curiosity of many French and foreign tourists every year. 25,000 people could sit in its stands in the past, it is a little less now but each year it hosts various shows including the traditional bullfights.

The Towers and Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes

The Tower of Constance and the ramparts of this city illustrate to a large extent the heritage of the Camargue. They bear witness to the medieval past of Aigues-Mortes and are distinguished by their good state of conservation.

The Abbey of Montmajour

This abbey mixes classical, Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles: this particularity already makes all its richness. It is made up of several grandiose buildings such as the Saint-Maur monastery, the tower of the abbot Pons de l'Orme, the Saint-Pierre monastery and the chapel of the same name.

The Seaquarium

visiting the Seaquarium du Grau-du-Roi is always an entertaining experience for children. They can admire different species and be thrilled by the sharkarium in which impressive sharks swim. The marine mammal basin does not leave any visitors indifferent, it is frequented by seals and maned sea lions of Patagonia.
