Spain dominates UK's top searched destinations for 2026
8 of the UK's 10 most searched destinations for 2026 are Spanish

Summer 2026 is almost here, and Brits have already made up their minds about where they’re going
Wish lists are in, flights are being eyed, and the search data doesn’t lie: this summer, Britain’s holiday heart belongs to Spain. Eight of the UK’s ten most-searched destinations for 2026 are Spanish, but it’s a Portuguese gem that actually tops the table.
Holidu, the holiday rental portal, has crunched the numbers behind this summer’s most-searched getaways, comparing how much a night’s stay actually costs from one hotspot to the next. The spread is bigger than you might expect: at one end sits Edinburgh, where £451 barely buys a single night, more than four nights in bargain-friendly Murcia. At the other, Albufeira, Britain’s most-searched destination of the summer, comes in at a far gentler £246.
Whether you’re chasing tapas in Andalusia or clifftop views in the Algarve, here’s everything you need to plan, and budget for your 2026 escape.

Spain dominates, but Albufeira takes the crown
Of the fifty most-searched destinations on Holidu.co.uk this year, twenty-four are in Spain, more than any other country by some distance. And yet the top spot doesn’t go to Spain at all. Albufeira, in Portugal’s Algarve, leads the entire ranking, drawing almost twice as many searches as second-placed Malaga, all while staying comfortably affordable at £246 a night.

The top 5: a distinctly Iberian podium
This year’s most-searched top five reads like a love letter to the Iberian coast. Albufeira (Portugal) leads comfortably, trailed by two Andalusian favourites, Malaga (£194) and Nerja (£182). Benidorm (£205), the Costa Blanca’s high-energy classic, takes fourth, while glossy Marbella (£297) rounds out the top five, proof that Brits are willing to pay a bit more for a touch of glamour.
Where to stay: Holidu Home in each of the top 5

- Cozy Home Malaga Paradise, Malaga – a central flat 550 m from the beach and the Antonio Banderas promenade, ideal for couples or small families wanting to combine city and coast. From £62 per night.
- Poolside Nerja, Nerja – a mountain-view apartment with its own covered terrace and access to a year-round shared pool, rated “fantastic” by guests. From £125 per night.

The 5 most expensive and 5 most affordable destinations
Popularity clearly comes at a price, but not always the price you’d expect. Some of the priciest nights on the list belong to quieter, smaller destinations rather than the big-name cities.
| Most expensive | Country | £ / night | Most affordable | Country | £ / night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh | Scotland | £451 | Murcia | Spain | £107 |
| Pollença | Spain | £409 | La Rochelle | France | £127 |
| San Sebastian | Spain | £391 | Torrevieja | Spain | £129 |
| Alcúdia | Spain | £377 | Paphos | Cyprus | £139 |
| Protaras | Cyprus | £336 | Porto | Portugal | £139 |
Edinburgh claims the title of most expensive destination in the ranking at £451 a night, with Mallorca’s Pollença (£409), Basque Country’s San Sebastian (£391), Alcúdia (£377) and Cyprus’s Protaras (£336) close behind — a reminder that scenery and prestige both carry a premium.
Bargain hunters, meanwhile, will find their happy place well away from the big cities. Murcia in southern Spain is the best-value destination on the list at just £107 a night, followed by the harbour town of La Rochelle in France (£127), Torrevieja (£129), Paphos in Cyprus (£139) and Porto in Portugal (£139) — proof that a smaller price tag doesn’t mean a smaller holiday.

Staying closer to home: UK destination prices
The fuller search data reveals five UK destinations Brits considered this summer, not just the three called out in the headline ranking — and prices vary enormously depending on the experience on offer:
| UK destination | £ / night |
|---|---|
| Saundersfoot, Wales | £200 |
| Tenby, Wales | £202 |
| St. Ives, England | £273 |
| London | £291 |
| Edinburgh, Scotland | £451 |
The fuller search data reveals five UK destinations Brits considered this summer, not just the three called out in the headline ranking, and prices vary enormously depending on the experience on offer:
Wales quietly punches above its weight here, with both Tenby and Saundersfoot, neighbouring seaside towns on the Pembrokeshire coast, offering the cheapest UK stays on the list, at just over £200 a night. Cornwall’s St. Ives sits comfortably in the middle, while Edinburgh, driven by its festival calendar, castle views and limited summer stock, commands the highest nightly rate in the entire ranking, UK or otherwise. That’s more than double Saundersfoot’s price for what is, on paper, the same kind of trip: a few nights away closer to home.
London’s £291 sits just behind Edinburgh, reflecting the capital’s year-round demand rather than any summer-specific spike, a reminder that in the UK, price is driven as much by a city’s everyday pulling power as by seasonal buzz.
Put another way: the gap between Saundersfoot and Edinburgh (£251) is wider than the gap between London and several of the Spanish top-10 entries, like Marbella or Palma. For Brits weighing up a staycation, it’s worth remembering that “closer to home” doesn’t always mean “cheaper”: Edinburgh in particular rivals, and even beats, some of the priciest destinations on the Continent. It’s a reminder that for Brits chasing value this summer, a flight abroad can often work out cheaper than staying home.
The takeaway
Whether you’re drawn to Albufeira’s clifftop views, Marbella’s glamour, or Murcia’s quiet affordability, this summer’s data makes one thing clear: where you choose to stay can be the difference between a holiday that stretches your budget and one that stretches your itinerary. Sometimes the most-searched destination and the best-value one are closer together than you’d think.
Methodology
Holidu analysed searches made by British travellers on holidu.co.uk for stays with check-in between 1 July and 31 August 2026. The most searched destinations were then ranked, and for each one the median price per night for a holiday rental for two to eight people was calculated, with statistical outliers excluded. Data was collected in June 2026.
