Where does a holiday villa give you the most for your money? We analysed guest-review scores and prices for more than 45,000 private villas across Europe to find out, and the winners might surprise you.

A villa holiday should feel like a treat, not a splurge. But with nightly prices ranging from under £130 to almost £700 depending on where you look, knowing where your money goes furthest makes all the difference. To settle it, we built the Villa Value Index: a ranking of 30 of Europe’s most popular villa destinations, scored by how much guest satisfaction each one delivers per pound.

The headline is a tale of two countries. All five of Europe’s highest-rated villa destinations are in Greece, yet the best value of all sits in the French countryside, where a private villa costs less than half the price of Italy’s postcard names. Here’s the full picture.

Provence takes the crown

The best value in Europe isn’t where you might expect. Provence, all rosé, lavender and honey-stone farmhouses, tops the index with an 8.9/10 guest rating for a median £129 a night. That’s less than half what you’d pay for a comparably-rated villa on the Italian lakes. Close behind is the Dordogne (9.0/10, £170 a night), where honey-stone châteaux, prehistoric caves and some of France’s best casual food add up to quiet luxury on a budget. Southern Italy’s Calabria (9.2/10, £189) and the French island of Corsica (9.1/10, £200) round out the top five, both offering the kind of unhurried, uncrowded summer the big-name spots have long since lost.

Greece rates highest

For sheer guest satisfaction, Greece is untouchable. The five highest-rated villa destinations in all of Europe are Greek: Naxos leads with a near-perfect 9.5/10, followed by Crete, Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Paros, all rated 9.4/10. Villas here aren’t the cheapest, but guests rate them more highly than anywhere else on the continent, and villas in Crete still start from around £295 a night. If a flawless stay matters more to you than a bargain, the Greek islands are the safe bet.

The postcard premium: where Italy costs the most

At the very top of the price scale sit Europe’s most famous names. The Amalfi Coast (£560 a night), Lake Como (£498) and Spain’s party island of Ibiza (£671) are the priciest villa destinations we found, so expensive they sit outside the value top 30 altogether. Guests still rate them warmly, but the premium is real: villas on the Amalfi Coast cost more than four times a similarly-rated stay in Provence. Sometimes the postcard is worth it, but it pays to know what you’re paying for.

Warm well into September

Late-summer travellers are spoilt for choice. Of the value picks, Sicily and Provence stay warmest into the shoulder season at 30–31°C in August and September, with the Peloponnese, Lanzarote and the Costa Blanca close behind at 28–30°C. Prefer your villa holiday a touch cooler? The French countryside and the Atlantic islands of Tenerife and Madeira sit at a gentler 24–26°C. For guaranteed heat and a pool, villas in Sicily are hard to beat, and booking after the school-holiday peak means the sun sticks around while the prices ease off.

Methodology

Holidu analysed its own listings data for private villas across 30 of Europe’s most popular villa destinations, including only destinations with at least 100 villas and 1,000 verified guest reviews so every figure rests on a solid sample. Each destination was scored on a Villa Value Index: its average guest rating relative to its median nightly price, so the ranking rewards destinations that combine high guest satisfaction with good value rather than simply the cheapest or the highest-rated. Guest rating is the mean of villa-level guest-review scores, expressed on a 0–10 scale. Price is the median nightly rate for the whole villa, converted from euros to pounds and rounded to the nearest pound; the median is used so a few very expensive villas don’t distort the figure. Average high temperatures are long-term August–September climate normals for a representative location in each destination. All Holidu data was collected in July 2026.
